Investigated growing lag of dispatching of changes to Wikipedia and co. We'll need to investigate further and change things so the lag between an edit on Wikidata and it being send to the Wikipedias and other projects is not too high.

Select the relevant text. Find the correct quotations marks in the special character inserter tool (marked as Ω in the toolbar).

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team have been working on mobile phone support. They have fixed many bugs and improved language support. They post weekly status reports on mediawiki.org. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving language support and functionality on mobile devices.
The team attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. There they participated in the Hackathon and met with individuals and groups of users. They also made several presentations about VisualEditor and the future of editing.
Following Wikimania, we announced winners for the VisualEditor 2015 Translathon. Our thanks and congratulations to users Halan-tul, Renessaince, जनक राज भट्ट (Janak Bhatta), Vahe Gharakhanyan, Warrakkk, and Eduardogobi.
For interface messages (translated at translatewiki.net), we saw the initiative affecting 42 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 56.5% before the translathon, and 78.2% after (+21.7%). In particular, Sakha improved from 12.2% to 94.2%; Brazilian Portuguese went from 50.6% to 100%; Taraškievica went from 44.9% to 85.3%; Doteli went from 1.3% to 41.2%. Also, while 1.7% of the messages were outdated across all languages before the translathon, the percentage dropped to 0.8% afterwards (-0.9%).
For documentation messages (on mediawiki.org), we saw the initiative affecting 24 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 26.6% before translathon, and 46.9% after (+20.3%). There were particularly notable achievements for three languages. Armenian improved from 1% to 99%; Swedish, from 21% to 99%, and Brazilian Portuguese, from 34% to 83%. Outdated translations across all languages were reduced from 8.4% before translathon to 4.8% afterwards (-3.6%).
We published some graphs showing the effect of the event on the Translathon page. We thank the translators for participating and the translatewiki.net staff for facilitating this initiative.
Auto-fill features for citations can be enabled on each Wikipedia. The tool uses the citoid service to convert a URL or DOI into a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. You can see an animated GIF of the quick, simple process at mediawiki.org. So far, about a dozen Wikipedias have enabled the auto-citation tool. To enable it for your wiki, follow the instructions at mediawiki.org.
Your wiki can customize the first section of the special character inserter in VisualEditor. Please follow the instructions at mediawiki.org to put the characters you want at the top.
In other changes, if you need to fill in a CAPTCHA and get it wrong, then you can click to get a new one to complete. VisualEditor can now display and edit Vega-based graphs. If you use the Monobook skin, VisualEditor's appearance is now more consistent with other software.
The team will be changing the appearance of selected links inside VisualEditor. The purpose is to make it easy to see whether your cursor is inside or outside the link. When you select a link, the link label (the words shown on the page) will be enclosed in a faint box. If you place your cursor inside the box, then your changes to the link label will be part of the link. If you place your cursor outside the box, then it will not. This will make it easy to know when new characters will be added to the link and when they will not.
On the English Wikipedia, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors. A recent controlled trial showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term. New users with access to VisualEditor were very slightly less likely to produce results that needed reverting. You can learn more about this by watching a video of the July 2015 Wikimedia Research Showcase. The proportion of new accounts with access to both editing environments will be gradually increased over time. Eventually all new users have the choice between the two editing environments.

Deaths at Wikipedia are a series of reports comparing items at Wikidata with death-by-year-categories of Wikipedia. For the years since 2000, only about 15% of items at Wikidata lack d:Property:P570 (date of death).

Soon the edit summary for edits through the API will also contain the automatic edit summary that you are used to for edits done through the website. The summary given by the API user will be appended to the automatic summary. (phabricator:T97247)

ویکیپیڈیا پر مضامین کی اچھی خاصی تعداد تو ہے، لیکن یہ غیر متوازن ہو چکا ہے۔ روبہ کے ذریعے شہروں کے مضامین بنانے سے اب آدھے مضامین شہروں کے ہیں۔ جبکہ دیگر موضوعات میں اسلام و اسلامی شخصیات، پاکستان و پاکستانی موضوعات، بھارت و بھارتی موضوعات شامل ہیں (جن پر کچھ بہتر اور کافی مواد ہے)۔
ذیل کے موضوعات پر مواد بہت کم، کمزور، بے حوالہ، یک سطری یا سرے سے موجود ہی نہیں ہے۔
سائنس و آئی ٹی، اسلام کے دیگر مذاہب، پاک و ہند کے علاوہ دوسرے ممالک کے (مذہب، پرچم، قومی ترانے، قومی تعطیلات، کھیل سیاسی جماعتیں، آئین، حقوق وغیرہ کے موضوعات) اہم نظریات (سیاسی، تاریخی، معاشرتی، قانونی، اخلاقی، سائنسی وغیرہ) اعزازات (مختلف شعبہ ہائے زندگی میں) ٹی وی چینل، شاہراہوں، کتابوں، جنگوں، قدیم تاریخ، جانوروں، پودوں، پرندوں، کھانوں، مشروبات، کھیلوں، ادب و ادبی موضوعات، اصطلاحات، ناموں کے ضد ابہام صفحات، اور دیگر کئی اہم، اور کچھ مقبول عام موضوعات پر مواد نہیں ہے، جو ہے، اس پر نظر ثانی کی ضرورت ہے، جو اہم مصامین ہیں ان ذکر کردہ عنوانات کے، انہیں لکھنے کی ضرورت ہے۔ اسی عدم توازن کے شکار اردو ویکیپیڈیا، کو درست اور قابل مطالعہ بنانے کے لیے ایک منصوبہ شروع کیا گیا ہے، جو سہ ماہی ہو گا۔

ہر سہ ماہی میں کئی بڑے شعبہ جات سے ذیلی موضوعات کو منتخب کیا جائے گا۔ جیسے ممالک کے مضامین موجود ہیں۔ لیکن ان کے یوم آزادی کے نہیں، تو ایک سہ ماہی میں ہم یوم آزادی بلحاظ ملک، کو رکھ سکتے ہیں جس سے تمام مضامین ہم تین ماہ میں لکھ لیں گے۔ اسی پھر اگلی سہ ماہی میں ہم پرچم بلحاط ملک، یا آئین بلحاظ ملک نکھ سکتے ہیں۔ وہ موضوعات جن پر سرے سے کچھ مواد بھی نا ہو۔ ان کو خاص اہمیت دی جائے گی۔ جیسے قدیم زبانیں، یا قدیم مذاہب، قدیم دور کی جنگیں۔
کیا آپ اس میں مدد کرنے کو تیار ہیں یا آپ خود سے جو کچھ پہلے سے کر رہے ہیں اسی طرح، اپنی مرضی سے کام کرنا چاہتے ہيں؟

Introduced a limit of 250 different entities that can be used on a page in the client via arbitrary access. The limit does not apply to convenience functions in lua, such as mw.wikibase.label which use a TermLookup instead of loading a full entity to get labels. (phabricator:T93885)

تقریباً 3 ماہ قبل مضمون “تحریک اسلامی طالبان“ میں ملک پاکستان کے اداروں خصوصاً پاک فوج اور ایجنسیوں کو طالبان کا سرغنہ قرار دیئے جانے کی کوشش پر اسمیں غیر ضروری الزامی و نامناسب مواد کے پکڑے جانے پر تصحیح کی گئی تو بار بار اسے منتظم عبید رضا کی جانب سے واپس اسی حالت میں لایا گیا۔ بار بار اصرار پر منتظم نے اس مضمون کو جس مضمون میں تھوڑی بہت اصلاح کی جا چکی تھی لاک کر دیا گیا۔ معاملہ مکمل طور پر حل نہ ہوا چونکہ مضمون میں خامیاں موجود تھیں تاہم کچھ عرصہ کے بعد اسی مضمون کو دوبارہ الزامی حالت میں (متن کو دائیں بائیں کر کے سرخیاں و عنوانات مٹا کر) خالصتاً پاکستان کے اداروں کیخلاف پروپیگنڈہ کو دوبارہ شائع کر دیا گیا۔
سوال یہ کہ جس منتظم نے مضمون لاک کیا تو اسمیں تبدیلیاں کیسے واقع ہوئیں۔ مرضی کا پروپیگنڈا کرنے کے بعد مضمون کو دوبارہ لاک کر دیا گیا۔
انہیں وجوہات کی بنیاد پر منتظم عبید رضا صاحب چھوٹی چھوٹی غلطیوں کا بہانہ بنا کر میرا کھاتہ 2 مرتبہ بلاک کروا چکے ہیں۔ جبکہ غلطیوں کا ازالہ تو موجود ہوتا ہے۔
ملا عمر کے مضمون میں مواد کا اضافہ و بہتر بنانے کی کوشش کی گئی تو منتظم عبید رضا فوراً ہوا دیتے ہیں۔ ابھی بھی کر کے دیکھ لوں تو فوراً ہٹا دیں گے۔
مضمون تحریک اسلامی طالبان سے لاک ہٹا کر مجھے موقع دیا جائے میں مضمون تحریر کرونگا اگر معیاری نہ ہوا تو بیشک حذف کر دیا جائے۔
مضمون ملا محمد عمر میں تبدیلی کا اختیار موجود ہے مگر کوئی بار بار اسے ختم کر دیتا ہے۔ آپ ان تبدیلیوں کو دیکھیئے اور موازنہ کیجئے کہ میرے مواد میں کون سی خامی ہے؟۔

مشکل ہے شعیب بھائی۔ سکھر پر دو کتابیں شائع ہوچکی ہیں۔ ایک جو میرے پاس ہے سندھی میں تاریخ سکھر، رحیمداد خان مولائی شیدائی کی اور دوسری تاریخ سکھر اردو میں محکمۂ ثقافت و سیاحت سندھ نے چھپوائی ہے۔ رحیمداد خان کی تاریخ مستند ہے اور انہوں نے عمارتوں پر تحقیقات کرکے مواد لکھا ہے۔ ان دو کتابوں کے علاوہ اور کوئی تاریخ اس وقت موجود نہیں۔ جب مواد ہی موجود نہیں تو مذکورہ مضامین کی ترمیم کس طرح کی جا سکتی ہے؟ اگر کوئی تحقیقات کرے گا بھی تو انہیں کتب پر اکتفا کرے گا نہ کہ طبع ذاد مواد پر۔ تحقیقات کربھی لے تو عمارات کی اس سے زیادہ معلومات ملنا مشکل ہے۔ ان تمام عمارات کا جو برطانوی دور میں تعمیر ہوئیں ان کا ریکارڈ صرف محکمۂ آرکائیو سندھ کے پاس "کمشنر سندھ کا ریکارڈ" کے نام سے موجود ہے۔

The call for candidates for 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board elections has begun on June 9. The last date to apply is June 29, 2021.
Since the beginning of the month, phabricator tickets about language codes (and names of languages) were reviewed and triaged to better reflect their content and current status. Some work was done to better identify the steps for such changes, highlight and address bottlenecks and system issues. Patches for a few codes were contributed and are being released. Phabricator "Language codes" workboard provides an overview, phab:T284856 attempts to identify maintenance steps and phab:T284276 determine turn-around times. phab:T284808 should finally close a gap in termbox language handeling. A way to better address some or all aspects of changes of language codes applicable to Wikipedia editions still needs to be found. Don't hesitate to request the addition or update of language names (e.g. the name of Dutch in Danish) or missing language codes, notably for monolingual strings (see Help:Monolingual text languages).

Improved documentation of the usage tracking aspects in API help pages. Usage tracking is an internal mechanism to track which article on Wikipedia etc uses which data from an Item on Wikidata. (phab:T283040)
Language codes for monolingual strings "gsw-fr", "ykg", "wya", "osa-latn" were made available: Alsatian, Tundra Yukaghir, Wendat, Osage (phab:T262922, phab:T252198, phab:T283364, phab:T265297)
The English name for language code "crh" and the Swedish name for "fa" were corrected (phab:T240350, phab:T281702)
Lexeme language codes ha-arab, sux-latn, sux-xsux, gsg, tlh-piqd, tlh-latn, bfi, pwn, enm were added. That is Hausa in Arabic script, Sumerian in cuneiform and Latin-script, German Sign Language, Klingon in pIqaD and Latin script, British Sign Language, Paiwan and Middle English. It was determined that language codes can be activated for Wikidata while being blocked for use on Incubator (phab:T273705), this to avoid projects such as a "British English Wikipedia"
Language code "es-419" for Latin American Spanish has been available for labels and descriptions for quite some time (phab:T230786)
A possibly confusing Russian mis-translation of the name of the language code for "multiple languages" (mul) is being reviewed (phab:T245927)
"en-simple:" can be used instead of "simple:" to link to Simple Wikipedia. Query Services outputs "en-simple", not "simple" for sitelinks to Simple Wikipedia (phab:T283149).
There was some discussion about the creation of a language code "en-in" for monolingual strings, but "en-in" as interface language seems to be preferred (phab:T212313)
The InternetArchiveBot team has come up with a new header for its documentation and user pages designed to make important links as easy to find as possible. We use this header on the bot's global user page, and we have it set up to show the labels in your interface language, meaning that the labels will appear in Russian on Russian Wikipedia (unless you override the interface language).
In order for this feature to work, we need translations of those labels. There are only six labels:

Mismatch Finder: We are making good progress on the tool. We made it possible to retrieve mismatches that are in the store part of the tool via an API.
Regular expressions in constraints are now no longer checked via the Query Service. The checks have been completely moved over to a dedicated service for regular expression checking. (phab:T204031)
Edits made via the user interface (as opposed to with tools, bots, etc.) are now tagged as such to make them easier to filter (example - edits made to labels, descriptions and aliases on mobile are still missing but will follow soon)
Working on allowing to restrict constraints to certain entity types (phab:T269724)

50 cool new things you can now do with KB’s collection highlights - In this series of 5 articles we show the added value of putting images and metadata of digitised collection highlights of the KB, national library of the Netherlands, into the Wikimedia infrastructure. By putting our collection highlights into Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia, dozens of new functionalities have been added. The "Wikidata Quickstatements" translator which lets users transfer metadata about citation sources fromZotero into Wikidata, no longer needs to be manually installed. Existing manually-installed versions should update automatically, like other translators.
Edits to labels, descriptions and aliases on mobile are now also tagged as edits made via the user interface. All edits made via the user interface are now tagged as such. (phab:T286775)

Other Noteworthy Stuff
User:SuccuBot has made its 100.000.000th edit. It is the first user account in Wikidata to reach this milestone.
In the frame of a Google Summer of Code project a new tool, called WikidataComplete was created. The tool smoothly integrates in the Wikidata UI and proposes new statements extracted by machine learning algorithms. Editors are asked to either approve or reject them. To activate it check here for a short tutorial check here. Any feedback is welcome here.
Continued work on the Mismatch Finder. We are now working on creating the page where mismatches will be listed for review.
Worked on support for "separators" parameter for distinct value constraints (phab:T277855)
Made it possible to restrict constraints to certain entity types (phab:T269724)
Added a new constraint type to ensure that the Item has a label in a particular language (phab:T195178)
Added a button for the Query Builder to query.wikidata.org to make the Query builder discoverable (phab:T276210) - integration in the example dialog is still in progress (phab:T280229)
We started work on some behind-the-scenes improvements to the way Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects are notified about a change that affects their articles. (They need this notification so the article can be purged and show the latest data from Wikidata again. It is also required for showing the edit in the watchlist and recent changes on those wikis. This should have no visible impact for editors but is needed maintenance work.

Continuing the work on the Mismatch Finder. This week we focused on the remaining groundwork for showing the first mismatches for review.
Continuing to work on improvements to the underlying system of how edits are propagated from Wikidata to the other Wikimedia projects.
Implemented two improvements for constraints: the “distinct values” constraint type now supports the “separator” parameter (phab:T277855) and we no longer check qualifiers on some unusual™ properties (phab:T235292)
Adding tags to some of the remaining UI edits that didn't get them yet for edits on Lexemes (phab:T290950)
Making it possible to add tags to some remaining Lexeme API modules (phab:T290951)
Fixed a bug in the Query Builder where it didn't show labels when opening an existing visual query from a shared link (phab:T280684)
Made the Query Builder more visible in the Query Service UI (phab:T280229)
