افغانستان میں لڑی جانے والی سوویت یا روسی لڑائی 9 سال تک لڑی گئی۔ اس کا آغاز دسمبر 1979 میں ہوا جبکہ اس کا اختتام فروری 1989 میں ہوا۔ اس لڑائی میں ایک طرف تو افغان فوج کے نام پر روسی فوج لڑ رہی تھی تو دوسری طرف ساری دنیا کے مجاہدین روس کے خلاف بر سر پیکار تھے۔ امریکہ اور روس کے درمیان سرد جنگ کی وجہ سے امریکہ اس جنگ میں کھل کر نہیں کود سکتا تھا مگر امریکی سی آئی اے نے کھل کر مجاہدین کی تربیت اور ہر طرح سے معاونت کی۔ اربوں ڈالر کا سرمایہ برطانیہ، امریکہ، سعودی عرب اور دوسرے ممالک نے روس کےخلاف مجاہدین کو دیا۔
