قدیم اولمپکس کے اصل کے بارے میں کئی نظریات ہیں. سب سے مقبول روایت کے مطابق [[ہیراکل]] اولمپک کھیلوں کا خالق تھا، اور اُس نے اولمپک بازی گاہ اور گردو پیش کے عمارات اپنے والد [[زیوس]] کے احترام میں بنائے. <br />
اولمپکس کے آغاز کے بارے میں دانشوروں کے رائے میں اختلاف ہے تاہم 776ء پر کثرت کا اتفاق ہے. آغاز کے فوراً بعد اولمپک کھیلوں نے بہت جلد تمام قدیم یونان میں اہمیت اختیار کرلی. اس زمانے میں سب سے مشہور کھلاڑی کا نام [[مائلو]] تھا جو کہ تاریخ میں واحد کھلاڑی ہے جس نے چھ اولمپکس میں ایک فتح حاصل کی.<br />
