جارج اورول نے جب 1949ء میں یہ ناول لکھا تھا اس وقت نہ کمپیوٹر ایجاد ہوا تھا اور نہ ہی انٹرنیٹ۔ اس ناول میں اس نے ایک خیالی مشین telescreen کا ذکر کیا تھا جو حکومت کو لوگوں کے خیالات سے آگاہ رکھے گی اور حکومت ایسے لوگوں پر نظر رکھ سکے گی اور حسب ضرورت سزا بھی دے سکے گی۔ اب انٹرنیٹ کی شکل میں وہ جاسوس مشین موجود بھی ہے اور اعلیٰ ترین سطح کی جاسوسی کر بھی رہی ہے۔ حکومت کی جانب سے حقائق مسخ کرنے کے بارے میں وہ لکھتا ہے
