Dear Urdu Wikipedia Admin Team

Lately it has come to my attention that a great many articles on Urdu Wikipedia are extremely poorly maintained, and thus are susceptible to misuse as active platforms for propaganda. Moderators seem to be unconcerned with the reliability and factual accuracy of articles and as a result many articles contain blatantly false information, and biased and opinionated statments. In some cases, entire articles are written like opinion essays, with emotional and persuasive language, and very little actual fact.

Most worrying is that many of the articles which contain such false information are of a politically sensitive nature. Many articles are used to posit the worldview that the Islamic religion is under a global threat from the whole of the rest of the world, or sometimes 'the West'. This is mostly done using falsely concocted stories and information which have no grounding in reality, and cannot be found in any reliable source. They are only found in other sources which seek to propagate the same absurd viewpoint.

The use of these falsehoods to incite the general public into hatred against the western world, or the non-Islamic world is a pathetic endeavour which sadly has been taken up by many Pakistan media outlets, and even some within India. Such material is blatant propaganda and has no place on Wikipedia whatsoever. The english language wikipedia guidelines make this perfectly clear, and these are the same guidelines which apply to every language version of wikipedia, including Urdu. Articles should not be biased and should present a neutral point of view, and shold use neutral language and tone. Wikipedia guidelines make clear that this is not a place for opinion essays. All information should also be verifiable, meaning it must be found in well known and reliable sources. If it is not, it should not be published.

As previously stated, moderators seem to be unconcerned with adhering to wikipedia quality standards, and may perhaps be active in these misdeeds themselves.

Rather, most moderators seem to be more concerned with coming up with absurd and bizarre neologisms for technical terms and names of objects which do not currently have Urdu words to represent them. This is also against wikipedia guidelines. The guidelines clearly state that wikipedia must not be used to promote any particular neologism, and should use terminology which the general reader and/or experts in a particular field are already aware of and understand. In the vast majority of cases where neologisms have been used on Urdu wikipedia, they seem to have been created by admins/users of wikipedia, and have virtually no existence outside of it. I have searched thoroughly through dictionaries of all kinds in an attempt to find some of the words and neologisms used on wikipedia, but sadly to no avail. This has led me to the conclusion that these words must indeed be invented by wikipedia users themselves. As previously stated, this is not allowed. Furthermore most of these terms are totally inconsistent with general Urdu usage, and are the subject of ridicule by anyone who hears them. Technical terms are completely unknown to experts in the relevant fields, meaning that they are invalid. Terms should be invented, if they have to be invented at all, by the experts who are going to use them and who understand their background and meaning. Not by linguists or language enthusiasts.

The attempt to stem the incoming tide of English words and terminology is a valiant and commendable one, but ultimately it is misguided and can only possibly end in failure. Such efforts have been undertaken by language authorities from around the world, from France, Iran, Turkey, and countless other places. Wherever they have been attempted they have only resulted in failure. In all cases invented words are ridiculed and laughed at by the general public and ultimately rejected. Such efforts have been ongoing for perhaps nearly a century, but despite all the tactics and strategies employed, have failed.

Urdu speakers and wikipedia admin would be wise to heed this as a warning to themselves. Do not consider yourselves to be cleverer than the people who tried this in the past - it simply does not work, regarless of how intelligent and cunning its instigators may be. The mass inventing of neologisms is a futile effort and should ideally be abandoned, especially when there are FAR more pressing concerns which moderators should be attending to, such as the accuracy and neutrality of articles. Urdu language enthusiasts, experts and literati would be spending their time and effort better if they focused on developing the non-technical side of the language and its creative aspects, and leaving the technical aspect to relevant experts. Remember that English words are pervading ordinary, non-technical language a lot as well, and these can be reduced by developing the language in a genuine and natural way.

Returning to the main point of this post, I think it is vital that the Urdu wikipedia admin team come to their senses and make a real and invigorated attempt to greatly improve the quality of articles on Urdu wikipedia, by removing biased material and propaganda, and by ensuring that all information is verifiable and accurate. In a media environment which thrives on propaganda and misinformation, wikipedia should act as the shining beacon of truth which can dispel myths and incorrect information and provide the public access to a reliable source of information, which is ultimately what they deserve. It should not be used to make this toxic and destructive media environment worse, or to propagate harmful and hateful myths.

Thank you
