Cleaning up files ترمیم

Hello! I made a post at ویکیپیڈیا:دیوان_عام/تجاویز/وثق_2021ء#GFDL_and_cleanup_in_files in 2021 about GFDL and cleaning up files.

All files need a valid license according to wmf:Resolution:Licensing policy. If they do not have a valid license the files have to be deleted.

I do not speak the language so it is very hard for me to check and fix problems. SO I hope local users will help check and fix. I have a bot and I can help fix some problems For example if an user state that "I'm the photographer and I release the file as cc-by-sa-3.0".

I made some suggestions that are still valid:

"I noticed that not all license templates have {{free media}}، {{Free in US media}} or {{non-free media}} to place them in categories like زمرہ:جملہ آزاد املاف or۔ I suggest that such a template is added to all license templates.

I know it will take a lot of time to clean up so I suggest to start by fixing میڈیاویکی:Licenses and try to have users upload free files to Commons. Then monitor all new uploads and make sure to ask uploaders to add a source, author and license.

Then take the easy files first. For example delete files from Special:UnusedFiles unless they are easy to fix. Move good files to Commons."

I hope someone would like to help out here. We need both admins and ordenary users to help out. If someone have a bot or can use AWB that would also be great.

Hi صارف:TheAafi! I missed that the page with licenses have been fixed. Sorry about that. So what could be done is to try to motivate users to upload free files to Commons.
It would be good if you could delete unused files (or transfer them to Commons if they are good). So that would be a big help.
Perhaps you could make a notice somewhere in urdu to ask users to help check their own uploads and add a license?

Dear MGA73, I believe that a notice at the village pump would work best (as something in the beginning). I will prepare a short notice in a day or two. At the same time, I'll check with the unused files if they are okay for Commons or not, or if they are under fair-use rationale but being unused, they fit best for deletion. If files are unused and have no license and uploader is no longer active I think you can just delete. If uploader is active then give uploader a few weeks to check files and add a license. MGA73, I am really not sure if my fellow Urdu Wikimedians have understood the licensing policy or not. The responses on the post come from an active admin stating that there have been changes in the Wikimedia softwares since 2006, and these images from 2006 and 2007, have had been included by users who had been active back then, and subsequently focusing on the usage of these files in articles, and not filling up the necessary license-related information. An image being used in an article is not everything we want - what we are looking for is license information. I guess most of these files would be in PD, and they can be easily transferred to Commons once a PD tag is added on them. ─ عافیؔ (تبادلۂ خیال) 14:31، 14 اپریل 2023ء (م ع و)

I just did not understand why change of software was relevant :-) Anyway I only see 4 reasons why we can add PD to files without a license: 1) The photo is very old, 2) The file is very simple (like a few letters or a very simple drawing, 3) there was a message in 2006 or whenever file was uploaded saying "by uploading the file you agree to license the photo as PD" or 4) The file is from NASA or another PD-website. If the users are still active they can add a source and a license. It is possible to add it with a bot if uploder is the photographer and make a statement like "I'm the photographer of all the files and I release the files under the license {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}" or something like that. MGA73, Unfortunately no. We don't have very much bots, or even any good active bots here. I am myself looking for a bot to do some work at here. User:Arif80s, User:Obaid Raza, User:Yethrosh and User:Tahir mq are active admins whilst User:Shuaib-bot is a bot operated by User:Yethrosh. صارف:TheAafi, just found a template that did not place files as either free or non-free. If you find any templates like that you can fix like this: Special:Diff/5361528. It means that the numbers above are not correct if any of the files used that template.
I have a bot I use to fix files. But it is not easy on wikis that do not use ltr so I prefer that local users fix. But if there are no users that will take the job I can try. Usually I add a template with "no license" or categories like "Files uploaded by user xyz". If files have a license I can also add {{Information}}. Bot edits ترمیم

I made a new heading to make it easier to edit. I created {{No license}} to illustrate how a template could work. It should be translated and made better for ur.wiki. I also added it to a few files with by bot. The files are in Category:Files with no license and I also added Category:Files uploaded by Arif80s. The files are just an example. I picked a user that is active and do not have too many files.

The idea is that it is easy for the user to find the files and it is easy to look at the files and see if there are any that are easy to fix. For example non-free files can be fixed by everyone. Files that are PD due to age could be fixed by other users. MGA73, Being honest, I am personally tired of telling the local community again and again the processes that need to be taken care of and I do not want to hit the "delete" button on my own to avoid the community blaming me. Most of the users say that we would prefer using the files and files should be moved to Commons wherever necessary. Some users have started file-importing tools that bring the en-wiki files to Urdu alongwith license details and it has been pretty much helpful. However, about the unused files, I am not pretty much sure about if the community has reached to any explicit solution. Some users have uploaded files from enwiki and not included license but a note that it is from enwiki. Similarly a plenty of files by User:ابوالحسن راجپوت and I see that he has added a relevant template on certain files. TheAafi There are 5,933 files that are likely to have no license. The reason I say likely is because there can be a text on the file page that says "I release this as Cc-by-sa-3.0" for example but if it is not added as a template the query will not know about it.

I think that any unused file with a non-free license or without a license should be deleted unless someone fix within 7 days.

I fully understand that it is not easy to delete files because it may make some users angry. Some years ago I had same discussion on a few wikis and they ended up making me an admin (even if I could not speak the language) because then the local admins were not to blame for the deletions. That had the disadvantage, that local admins did nothing so its not a good solution. I think that as a minimum local admins should take care of new uploads that does not have a license. But I can perhaps ask on Meta if a steward can help mass delete old files if no local solution can be found.

It seems that there are 1,712 unused files. I could add a {{no license}} on the unlicensed files and a 
for example on the unused files. But because of the high number of files my bot should probably have a bot flag.

Jimbo said a few years ago that it poses a legal threat to wikipedia if there are files on wikipedia with a bad copyright. In worst case uploading files can be prohibited if there are many bad files. TheAafi I use pywikipedia and it is usually replace.py i use.
I also use https://quarry.wmcloud.org/ so my edits are a combination of search/replace and lists.

TheAafi Hello again! I can add {{No license|Arif80s}} on the files without a license like on File:پطرس بخاری آخری آرام گاہ.jpg. That will place the files in categories like زمرہ:Arif80s_کی_اپلوڈ_کردہ_فائلیں.
If someone add a valid license they just have to remove the "no license" template and that will also remove the tracker category.
But there are around 5965 files so it would be best if my bot gets a bot flag before I edit. Unless ofcourse you prefer that the edits are not hidden away. --MGA73 (تبادلۂ خیال • شراکتیں) 14:04، 1 جون 2023ء (م ع و)

@MGA73, unfortunately, there is not very much movement. I had some off-wiki discussions and we ended up with the idea that we should be deleting the older ones. @Obaid Raza feels that we should delete all unused files that have been uploaded prior to 2023 except those that are related to help pages and Urdu Wikipedia. Hello again! I noticed a few edits like Special:Diff/5431609. The file now have a license but we need to know who the photographer (copyright holder) is and we also need proof that the copyright holder agreed to the license. If the copyright have expired the license template should be PD-old or similar.

Hello TheAafi + Obaid Raza and everyone else!

I made a list of files without a license in صارف:MGA73/NoLicense and it has 5997 files today.

On خاص:غیر_مستعمل_فائلیں there are 1728 unused files.

Admins are cleaning up but it takes a lot of time. So I suggest this:

  1. I add {{No license|<username>}} where "<username>" is the name of the uploader. The {{No license}} will then categorize the files in relevant categories and make it easier for a user to find own files. It will also tell uploader how to fix.
  2. I add {{Orphan file}} to all unused files. It will show users that the file is not in use and that they could see if it is relevant for an article. If the file have no license I can add {{Orphan file|no-license}} to put it in a separate category.
  3. After 30 days all files that are both orphan and have no license is mass deleted.
  4. After 30 days more all files without a license is mass deleted.

It is important that the users see that the files are in risk of deletion so I could add the templates without a bot flag. But it will flood recent changes so if that is not preferred than the bot should have a flag.

The files have now been marked and can be seen in زمرہ:اجازت نامہ سے عاری فائلیں and زمرہ:Wikipedia orphaned files - no license. I hope someone will make a notice in Urdu and inform everyone that they should help check their own uploads.
