Timeline ترمیم

2014 ترمیم

In the course of their Anbar campaign، داعش militants seized at least 70% of the Anbar Province by جون 2014,[80] including the cities of فلوجہ،[81][82] القائم، عراق،[83] and half of the provincial capital of رمادی۔[84] ISIL forces also infiltrated ابوغریب in محافظہ بغداد۔[85]

In early جون 2014, following further large-scale offensives in Iraq، ISIL seized control of موصل (شہر)، the second most populous city in Iraq,[86] the nearby town of تلعفر[87] and most of the surrounding محافظہ نینوی۔[88] ISIL also captured parts of Kirkuk and Diyala provinces[89] and تکریت، the administrative center of the Salahuddin Governorate,[90] with the ultimate goal of capturing بغداد، the Iraqi capital.[91] IS was believed to have only 2,000–3,000 fighters up until the Mosul campaign، but during that campaign, it became evident that this number was gross underestimate.[92] There were also reports that the number of Sunni groups in Iraq that were opposed to the predominantly Shia government had joined ISIS, thus bolstering the group numbers.[93] However, the کرد—who are mostly Sunnis—in the northeast of Iraq, were unwilling to be drawn into the conflict, and there were clashes in the area between ISIL and the Kurdish Peshmerga۔[94][95]

ISIL executed 1,700 Iraq soldiers who had surrendered in the fighting and released many images of mass executions via its Twitter feed and various websites.[96]

In late جون، ISIS militants captured two key crossings in Anbar, a day after seizing the border crossing at Al-Qaim۔ According to analysts, capturing these crossings could aid ISIL in transporting weapons and equipment to different battlefields.[97] Two days later, the Syrian Air Force bombed ISIL positions in Iraq. Iraqi Prime Minister نوری المالکی stated: "There was no coordination involved, but we welcome this action. We welcome any Syrian strike against Isis because this group targets both Iraq and Syria."[98]

At this point, The Jerusalem Post reported that the Obama administration had requested US$500 million from the امریکی کانگرس to use in the training and arming of "moderate" Syrian rebels fighting against the Syrian government, in order to counter the growing threat posed by ISIS in Syria and Iraq.[99]

On 29 جون، ISIL announced the establishment of a new خلافت۔ ابوبکر البغدادی was appointed its خلافت، and group formally changed its name to the Islamic State.[100] Four days later, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed caliph of the new Islamic State, said that Muslims should unite to capture روم in order to "own the world."[101][102] He called on Muslims all over the world to unite behind him as their leader.[103]

On 24 جولائی، ISIL blew up the Mosque and tomb of the Prophet Yunus (Jonah) in Mosul,[104] with no reported casualties.[105] Residents in the area said that ISIS had erased a piece of Iraqi heritage.[106] Jonah's tomb was also an important holy site in the Jewish heritage as well.[107] A few days later, ISIL also blew up the Nabi Shiyt (Prophet شیث علیہ السلام) shrine in موصل (شہر)۔ Sami al-Massoudi, deputy head of the اہل تشیع endowment agency which oversees holy sites, confirmed the destruction and added that ISIS had taken artifacts from the shrine to an unknown location.[108]

In an اگست offensive، ISIL captured سنجار and a number of other towns in the north of the country. Almost 200,000 civilians, mostly یزیدی، managed to flee from the fighting in سنجار city,[109][110] about 50,000 of them fled into the Sinjar Mountains،[110] where they were trapped without food, water or medical care,[111] facing starvation and dehydration.[110] They had been threatened with death if they refused conversion to the Islam. A UN representative said that "a humanitarian tragedy is unfolding in Sinjar."[112] By the end of the month, ISIL massacred 5,000 Yazidi men، with killings running in the hundreds in different villages.[113] In addition, during this latest offensive, the Islamic State advanced to within 30 km of the Iraqi Kurdish capital of اربیل in northern Iraq.[114][115]

Prompted by the siege and killings of the Yazidis, on 7 اگست، President Obama authorized targeted airstrikes in Iraq against ISIL، along with airdrops of aid.[116] The UK offered the US assistance with surveillance and refuelling, and planned humanitarian airdrops to Iraqi refugees.[117] The US asserted that the systematic destruction of the Yazidi people by the Islamic State was genocide.[118] The Arab League also accused the Islamic State of committing crimes against humanity.[119][120]

On 13 اگست، U.S. airstrikes and Kurdish forces broke the ISIL siege of Mount Sinjar.[121][122][123] Also, five days later, Kurdish Peshmerga ground troops, with the help of Iraqi Special Forces and the US air campaign, overran ISIL militants and reclaimed the Mosul Dam.[124][125][126]

On 31 اگست، the United States, France, United Kingdom and Australia began humanitarian aid drops like food, water and medical supplies, to help prevent a potential massacre against the Shi'a Turkmen minority in Amirli. The US also carried out air strikes on ISIS positions around and near Amirli. Iraqi officials stated that they had reached Amirli and broken the siege and that the military was fighting to clear the areas around the town. This is known to be the first major turning point against the ISIL in عراق۔[127]

In ستمبر، the United States sent an additional 250 US troops to protect American personnel,[128] while the first engagement of the British military against ISIS targets took place when a British Panavia Tornado jet dropped a Paveway IV bomb on "a heavy weapon position" operated by ISIS in northwest Iraq at the end of the month.[129][130] In addition, Australia offered 200 special forces to the Kurds[131] and 600 Australian troops landed in the UAE.[132][133] The following month, Australia authorized its special forces troops to go to Iraq as part of the anti-ISIS coalition that day,[134][135] as well as authorizing airstrikes.[136]

Mid-اکتوبر، ISIL forces captured the city of Hīt، after the 300-strong Iraqi Army garrison abandoned and set afire its local base and supplies and about 180,000 civilians (including refugees of the previous Anbar offensive) fled the area.[137][138] Later that month, Operation Ashura is launched by Iraqi forces and Iranian-backed Shia militas, scoring a major victory and retaking the strategic town of Jurf al-Sakhar near Baghdad, and securing the way for millions of Shia pilgrims who were going to Karbala and Najaf On the عاشورا۔ Kurdish forces, meanwhile, recaptured Zumar۔[139]

On 21 اکتوبر، ISIL seized terrain north of the Sinjar Mountains, thus cutting the area's escape route to Kurdish areas. The Yazidi militias then withdrew from there into the mountains, where the number of Yazidi civilian refugees was estimated at 2,000–7,000.[140] The mountains had once again been partially surrounded by ISIL.[141]

In mid-نومبر، Iraqi forces retook control of most part of the strategic city Baiji from the Islamic State[142][143] and breaks the siege of the nearby oil refinery.[144] However, by the following month, ISIL recaptured Baiji and reestablished the siege of the refinery.[145][146][147]

On 17 دسمبر، Peshmerga forces, backed by 50 U.S.-led coalition airstrikes on ISIL positions,[148] launched an offensive to liberate Sinjar[148] and to break the partial ISIL siege of the Sinjar Mountains.[141] In less than two days, the siege was broken. After ISIL forces retreated, Kurdish fighters were initially faced with the clearing out mines around the area,[149] but quickly opened a land corridor to those mountains, enabling Yazidis to be evacuated. The operation left 100 ISIL fighters dead.[148]

Later on 21 دسمبر، Syrian Kurdish YPG fighters south of the mountain range reached Peshmerga lines, thus linking their two fronts.[141] The next day, the YPG broke through ISIL lines, thus opening a corridor from سوریہ to the town of Sinjar. By the evening, the Peshmerga took control of much of Sinjar.[141]

2015 ترمیم

In late جنوری، Iraqi forces recaptured the entire province of محافظہ دیالی from the Islamic State.[150] Also, beginning of the Mosul Offensive in which Peshmerga forces captured large amount of territory surrounding موصل (شہر)۔[151]

On 2 مارچ، Second Battle of Tikrit began[152] and after more than a month of hard fighting, government troops and pro-Iranian Shiite militias overcame ISIL fighters and took Tikrit.[153] This success was off-set in late May, by ISIL's capture of the provincial capital of Ramadi in Anbar province.[154]

On 17 جولائی، a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in a crowded marketplace in the city of Khan Bani Saad during عید الفطر celebrations, killing 120–130 people and injuring 130 more. Twenty more people were reported missing since the bombing.[155][156]

On 13 اگست، a suicide bomber detonated a truck bomb in a crowded marketplace in صدر سٹی، بغداد، killing at least 75 people and injuring 212 more.[157] On 27 اگست، a suicide bomber assassinated General Abdel Rahman Abu Ragheef, deputy commander of operations in the province of Anbar, and Brigadier Safeen Abdel Majeed, a divisional commander.[158]

ISIL forces lost Sinjar on نومبر 13 to Kurdish forces.[159]

On دسمبر 16–17, ISIL forces mounted a major offensive north-east of Mosul against Kurdish position but were repelled.[160] Starting دسمبر 22, the Iraqi Army began a campaign to recapture رمادی۔[161] On دسمبر 28, Iraq declared Ramadi liberated from ISIL forces and under the control of the Iraqi government.[162]

2016 ترمیم

Iraqi forces regained control of Hīt[163] and Ar-Rutbah[164] in offensive operations in 2016 and then Fallujah as well in the Third Battle of Fallujah ending in جون 2016.[165]

On 16 اکتوبر 2016, the Battle of Mosul (2016–2017) began.[166]

2017 ترمیم

In May, a member from the Canadian Special Forces Joint Task Force 2 disrupted a Daesh attack on Iraqi security forces. The target was successfully hit at 3,540 metres from a high-rise, setting the world's longest recorded sniper kill.[167]

In اپریل، the Iraqi Army، with the help of the Popular Mobilization Forces، launched the Western Nineveh offensive to capture territory west of Mosul.[168] The PMU were able to reach the Iraq–Syria border، meeting up with territory controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces۔

On 10 جولائی، Iraqi Army forces capture Mosul on the 10th of جولائی۔[169] Following the victory in Mosul, the Iraqi Army launched operations to sweep what remained of ISIL-controlled territory in the country. The Tal Afar offensive was launched on the 20th of اگست[170] and completed by 31 اگست with a major Iraqi Army victory.[171] The Hawija offensive started in late ستمبر and was complete by 5 اکتوبر۔[172][172]

On 25 ستمبر، عراقی کردستان held an unofficial independence referendum۔ Turnout was reported to be 72.83% with 92.73% voting in favor of independence from Iraq. In response to the referendum, the Iraqi Army launched a short offensive on 15 اکتوبر against Iraqi Kurdistan to recapture the disputed city of Kirkuk with the help of the Talabani family and some PUK members.[173] Following the capture of Kirkuk and سنجار،[173][174] Masoud Barzani announced his intentions to step down as President of Iraqi Kurdistan، effective 1 نومبر، after being in power for 12 years. His gamble of pushing through with the unofficial referendum ended with the disputed territories being recaptured by Iraq and with the Kurdish statebuilding project being left abandoned.[175]

Iraq captured ISIL's last two strongholds of Al-Qa'im and Rawah[176] on the 17th of نومبر۔[177] After the Iraqi army captured the last ISIL-held areas in the al-Jazira desert bordering Syria, the prime minister announced the end of the war.[178][68] A victory parade was held in Baghdad on the following day, and Prime Minister al-Abadi declared that 10 دسمبر would become a new annual holiday for Iraq.[179] However, other government officials and sources, such as the Australian Government، British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson، and Reuters، warned that they expected ISIL to fight on by other means, such as گوریلا جنگ and دہشت گردی۔[69][70][71]

Human rights ترمیم

Nearly 19,000 civilians have been killed in Iraq in ISIL-linked violence between جنوری 2014 and اکتوبر 2015.[180] ISIL executed up to 1,700 Shia Iraqi Air Force cadets from Camp Speicher near Tikrit on 12 جون 2014.[181] The genocide of Yazidis by ISIL has led to the expulsion, flight and effective exile of the یزیدی people from their ancestral lands in northern Iraq.[182]

According to Newsweek، تنظیم برائے بین الاقوامی عفو عام claimed that "Iraqi government forces and paramilitary militias have tortured, arbitrarily detained, forcibly disappeared and executed thousands of civilians who have fled the rule of the Islamic State militant group"۔[183] The report, titled Punished for Daesh’s crimes’، alleges that thousands of Sunni men and boys have been forcibly disappeared by Iraqi government forces and militias.[184]
