'''ظہیر الدین محمد بابر''' (پیدائش: 1483ء - وفات: 1530ء) [[ہندوستان]] میں [[مغل سلطنت]] کا بانی تھا۔ انہیں ماں پیار سے '''بابر''' (شیر) کہتی تھی۔ اس کاباپکا باپ [[عمر شیخ مرزا]] [[وادئ فرغانہ|فرغانہ]] (ترکستان) کا حاکم تھا۔ باپ کی طرف سے [[امیر تیمور|تیمور]] اور ماں [[قتلغ نگار خانم]] کی طرف سے [[چنگیز خان]] کی نسل سے تھا۔ اس طرح اس کی رگوں میں دو بڑے فاتحین کا خون تھا۔ بارہ برس کا تھا کہ باپ کا انتقال ہو گیا۔ چچا اور ماموں نے شورش برپا کردی جس کی وجہ سے گیارہ برس تک پریشان رہا۔ کبھی تخت پر قابض ہوتا اور کبھی بھاگ کر جنگلوں میں روپوش ہوجاتا۔ بالآخر [[1504ء]] میں [[بلخ]] اور [[کابل]] کا حاکم بن گیا۔ یہاں سے اس نے [[ہندوستان]] کی طرف اپنے مقبوضات کو پھیلانا شروع کیا۔
