اگرچہ اسلامی پیغمبر محمد بن عبد اللہ کا وجود ہم عصر یا قریبی ہم عصر تاریخی ریکارڈ سے قائم ہے، [1][2] محمد بن عبد اللہ سے متعلق کئی تاریخی واقعات کی تاریخیت اور غیر تاریخی پن کے عناصر کے درمیان میں فرق کرنے کی کوششیں زیادہ کامیاب نہیں ہوئیں۔ لہذا، محمد بن عبد اللہ کی تاریخیت، ان کی ذات کو چھوڑ کر، زیر بحث رہتی ہے، محمد بن عبد اللہ سے متعلقہ تاریخ کتنی معتبر ہے اس کے بارے میں اختلاف ہے، مسلم ذرائع کے مطابق "انھوں نے جو کچھ بھی کیا اور کہا وہ سارا قلم بند (ریکارڈ) کیا گیا"، [3] جب کہ بعض علمی ذرائع کا دعویٰ ہے کہ محمد بن عبد اللہ کی زندگی کے بارے میں تقریباً تمام دستیاب معلومات، ان کے وجود کی حقیقت کے سوا، تاریخی اعتبار سے قابل اعتبار نہیں۔[4]
