"پہلی جنگ عظیم کے میں خواتین" ہر طرف سے بے مثال تعداد میں متحرک تھیں۔ ان خواتین کی اکثریت کو سول ورک فورس میں بھرتی کیا گیا تھا تاکہ وہ بھرتی کیے گئے مردوں کی جگہ لے سکیں یا اسلحے کی وسیع فیکٹریوں میں کام کریں۔ ہزاروں خواتین نے فوج میں معاون کردار ادا کیے، لیکن کچھ ممالک میں انھوں نے لڑائی بھی لڑی۔

جنگ میں شامل متعدد ممالک میں خواتین مزاحمتی کام اور جاسوسی، طبی پیشے سے متعلق کام، صحافت اور لڑائی میں شرکت کی وجہ سے ہیرو بن گئیں۔ ان میں سے بہت سی خواتین کو ان کے اپنے اور دوسرے ممالک کے تمغوں سے نوازا گیا۔

سیکڑوں یا ممکنہ طور پر ہزاروں خواتین میں سے جنھوں نے اپنے ممالک کے لیے جنگ لڑی، زیادہ تر کو اپنی جنس کو چھپانا پڑا۔ جب حقیقت سامنے آتی، تو انھیں عام طور پر ملازمت سے برخاست کر دیا جاتا، جیسا کہ برطانیہ، فرانس اور جرمنی میں ہوا تھا۔ دوسرے ممالک جیسے آسٹریا، ہنگری، سربیا اور روس میں انھیں کھلے عام خدمت کرنے کی اجازت تھی۔

وجوہات

جنگی کوششوں میں فعال طور پر شامل ہونے والی خواتین کے مقاصد مختلف تھے۔ کچھ فوج میں اپنے پیاروں کی حامیوں کے طور پر اپنی قابلیت کو ثابت کرنے کی کوشش کر رہی تھیں، جب کہ دیگر "خواتین کا کام" سمجھے جانے والے عہدوں کے علاوہ دیگر عہدوں پر کارآمد ہونے کے خیال سے متوجہ ہوئیں۔

بہت سی خواتین کا خیال تھا کہ جنگی کوششوں میں ان کی شراکت سے ووٹ کا حق حاصل کرنے کی ان کی کوششوں میں مدد ملے گی۔ اور، درحقیقت، عالمی خواتین کی حق رائے دہی کی تحریک نے جنگ کے دوران میں مسلسل فوائد حاصل کیے، ڈنمارک اور آئس لینڈ نے 1915ء میں خواتین کو مکمل حق رائے دہی فراہم کیا۔ اگلے سال ناروے اور کینیڈا میں بھی ووٹنگ کے حقوق کو بڑھا دیا گیا۔ فروری 2018 میں، برطانیہ نے ایک بڑا حق رائے دہی کا قانون منظور کیا جو جنگی کوششوں میں خواتین کی شرکت کی اہمیت سے براہ راست متعلق سمجھا جاتا تھا۔ برسوں کی مخالفت کے بعد، ریاستہائے متحدہ کے صدر ووڈرو ولسن نے ان کی خدمات کے اعتراف میں خواتین کے حق رائے دہی کی وکالت کرنے کے لیے 1918ء میں اپنی پوزیشن تبدیل کی۔
